Unturned Anti-Cheat

Kernel-level BattlEye with Steam game bans, VAC in a smaller role, and community-run servers whose owners set the rules and can ban by hardware.

In plain EnglishThis page explains the anti-cheat that protects Unturned - the system that tries to catch and ban cheaters. It covers how strict that system is and how cheats try to stay hidden from it. No cheat is ever 100% safe, so always check a product's status before you buy.

What anti-cheat does Unturned use?

Unturned uses BattlEye, a kernel-level anti-cheat that loads a Windows driver with deep system access. Caught cheaters get an account ban (community servers can ban their hardware too), and our database rates its detection strength low. The guide below covers how it detects, what a ban really costs and what kind of build survives.

Unturned is Smartly Dressed Games’ free-to-play, open-world zombie survival sandbox. Its Steam page lists BattlEye as a kernel-level anti-cheat, and the studio says it uses BattlEye alongside Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC). BattlEye does most of the work: SDG’s support pages say Unturned used VAC more before BattlEye was added.

Every multiplayer server is run by the community, not by SDG. Each owner sets their own rules, and SDG says it cannot step into their moderation decisions. So where you play matters as much as what BattlEye sees.

How BattlEye works in Unturned

BattlEye runs at kernel level and applies a Steam game ban when it detects a cheat. SDG adds checks of its own on the server. Since 2025 the server checks shots more strictly against line of sight, and it now sends less information about distant players, which SDG says makes ESP and radar cheats less useful.

Unturned’s source code is now public, but SDG says that adds little for cheat developers. The BattlEye code written for Unturned stays private, even from SDG, and BattlEye keeps watching for new cheats.

What an Unturned ban actually means

Unturned has three kinds of ban. A BattlEye game ban shows the message "You are banned from playing multiplayer", appears on your Steam profile and covers Unturned only. A VAC ban blocks VAC-secure servers. A server ban covers one server, and SDG says it often extends to other servers run by the same host.

SDG cannot lift server bans, so those go to the server’s own staff, while BattlEye bans are appealed through BattlEye’s contact form. Servers can ban by hardware too: SDG says the game spots players trying to get round HWID bans on servers, and since February 2025 a player caught by its HWID spoofer check gets a disconnect message instead of a silent "shadowban".

Detection track record

We rate Unturned "Low" on client detection, but BattlEye is busy here: SDG counted 11,196 accounts banned through BattlEye in the first few months of 2025. SDG also passes what it learns about new cheats on to BattlEye.

SDG keeps closing holes as well. In September 2026 it fixed cheats that used a fake lobby ID to join other players’ groups. On a community server you also answer to an admin with their own rules.

Cheating in Unturned safely

Unturned rewards knowing where loot, zombies and other players are. Since July 2025 the server sends less data about players who are far away, which SDG says makes ESP and radar cheats less useful, so expect player ESP to work best at closer range.

Read a server’s rules before you play, because each owner decides what gets you banned and some ban by hardware. Keep aim help subtle, since the server now checks hits against line of sight more strictly. The Unturned build we keep current is below.

Unturned anti-cheat FAQ

Does Unturned use BattlEye or VAC?
Both, but BattlEye does most of the work. Its Steam page lists BattlEye as a kernel-level anti-cheat, and SDG says Unturned used VAC more before BattlEye was added.
Are there official Unturned servers?
No. SDG says multiplayer servers are hosted and managed by the community. SDG only moderates the public server list, where it can hide or remove servers that, for example, advertise cheats.
Can you still play Unturned after a BattlEye ban?
Offline, yes. Valve says a game ban cannot stop you launching a game and playing it offline, and it only applies to that one game. It does stop you playing Unturned online.
Does the source code release make Unturned easier to cheat?
SDG says no. It says the code adds little for cheat developers, that BattlEye’s Unturned-specific code is still private, and that BattlEye will keep watching for new cheats.
