Left 4 Dead 2 Anti-Cheat

User-mode VAC on a game Valve still patches: a VAC ban is permanent and cannot be appealed, while server admins can ban you by their own rules.

In plain EnglishThis page explains the anti-cheat that protects L4D2 - the system that tries to catch and ban cheaters. It covers how strict that system is and how cheats try to stay hidden from it. No cheat is ever 100% safe, so always check a product's status before you buy.

What anti-cheat does Left 4 Dead 2 use?

L4D2 uses Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC), a user-mode anti-cheat that runs without a kernel driver. Caught cheaters get a permanent VAC ban on the account, and our database rates its detection strength low. The guide below covers how it detects, what a ban really costs and what kind of build survives.

L4D2 is Valve’s co-op zombie shooter from 2009, with Versus and Survival modes alongside the campaigns. Its Steam page lists VAC (Valve Anti-Cheat) as its anti-cheat software, not the kernel-level notice that heavier systems carry.

The game is old but not abandoned. In March 2024 Valve fixed several matchmaking lobby exploits and changed how lobbies pick its official dedicated servers. In June 2026 it fixed crashes and exploits reported through HackerOne.

How VAC works in L4D2

VAC is an automated system that looks for known cheats on your PC, which Valve says it detects by their signatures. Changing the game’s core files or libraries to gain an advantage counts as a cheat too. VAC only acts when you join a VAC-secured server with a cheat on your computer.

Reports do not ban anyone on their own: Valve says nobody is VAC banned on reports alone. Server admins are separate. They can ban you from their servers for any reason, but they cannot issue a VAC ban.

What an L4D2 ban actually means

A VAC ban is permanent and cannot be appealed. Valve removes one only if it finds the ban was issued wrongly, and it stays on the account whoever was playing at the time. Items and games cannot be moved off a banned account.

The ban is narrower than many players fear. Valve publishes two lists of games that share one VAC ban, and L4D2 is on neither. A banned account can still play offline, on LAN and on servers that are not VAC-secured. Valve’s VAC pages describe bans on accounts and never mention banning hardware, though in games where the developer switches it on, a ban also reaches every account sharing the same phone number.

Detection track record

We rate L4D2 "Low" on client detection. VAC runs without a kernel driver and catches the cheats it already knows by their signatures.

The bigger risks are people and add-ons. Versus players notice someone who never misses, and server admins can ban on sight. Valve also warns that cheats can be disguised as scripts or custom skins, so only install add-ons from sources you trust.

Cheating in L4D2 safely

L4D2 is mostly co-op, and its AI Director changes the level layout, world objects and enemy numbers from run to run. ESP for the Infected and for items tells you what this run holds, without touching another player.

Versus is different, because the other team is human and watching. Keep aim help and movement tricks out of public Versus games, and stay off VAC-secured servers with any account you are not ready to lose. The L4D2 builds we keep current are below.

L4D2 anti-cheat FAQ

Can you get VAC banned in L4D2?

Does a L4D2 VAC ban affect other games?
Valve publishes two lists of games that share one VAC ban, and L4D2 is on neither. To see what your ban covers, check VAC Status under Steam > Settings > Account.
