Grand Theft Auto V Anti-Cheat

Kernel-level BattlEye in GTA Online since September 2024, optional in Story Mode, with Rockstar suspensions that reset characters and bans that never expire.

In plain EnglishThis page explains the anti-cheat that protects GTA 5 - the system that tries to catch and ban cheaters. It covers how strict that system is and how cheats try to stay hidden from it. No cheat is ever 100% safe, so always check a product's status before you buy.

What anti-cheat does Grand Theft Auto V use?

GTA 5 uses BattlEye, a kernel-level anti-cheat that loads a Windows driver with deep system access. Caught cheaters get an account ban, and our database rates its detection strength low. The guide below covers how it detects, what a ban really costs and what kind of build survives.

GTA V on PC has protected GTA Online with BattlEye since 17 September 2024. Rockstar calls it kernel anti-cheat software. On Steam, both the Enhanced edition, out since 4 March 2025, and the older Legacy edition list it as kernel-level.

BattlEye only has to run when you play online. Rockstar lets you switch it off for Story Mode, and its official community roleplay servers do not need it at all: their launchers turn it off.

How BattlEye works in GTA 5

Rockstar says BattlEye looks for cheat software reaching GTA Online servers, attempts to change the game’s protected code and attempts to spoil other players’ games. Its list of what BattlEye monitors includes running processes and drivers, game and system memory, and hardware identifiers such as serial numbers.

Reports are the other half. Rockstar says the in-game report, under the Online tab and then Players, is the most effective way to report a cheater, because it gathers more information. Steam Deck does not support BattlEye for GTA Online, so on that device you can play Story Mode only.

What a GTA 5 ban actually means

Rockstar can suspend or ban, depending on what you did. A suspension starts at once, shows an end date and can reset your online characters with all their progress, property and inventory. Break the rules again after it ends and the account is banned for that title, and bans never expire.

Rockstar’s policy also says these actions may affect your Rockstar Games account and/or your gaming system, so a ban may not stop at the account. Cheat developers can be banned from every Rockstar title at once, with no suspension first. Appeals go through Rockstar’s form at rsg.ms/appeal.

Detection track record

We rate GTA V "Low" on client detection. BattlEye is mandatory in GTA Online, but Rockstar does not publish ban counts, so there is no public record to judge it by.

Money is watched as well as code. Rockstar says cheaters change GTA$ and RP for themselves and for other players. It routinely sweeps for money and RP gained that way and corrects the accounts.

Cheating in GTA 5 safely

In GTA Online the biggest risk is anything other players can see: spawning money, joining money lobbies or ruining other players’ sessions. Rockstar names money lobbies, account boosting and interfering with other players’ games as offences, and a suspension can reset the character you built.

BattlEye is mandatory in GTA Online but optional in Story Mode, and Rockstar’s mod guidelines forbid cheat menus in its multiplayer. The GTA 5 builds we keep current are below.

GTA 5 anti-cheat FAQ

Does GTA 5 have an anti-cheat?
Yes, on PC. Since September 2024 GTA Online has used BattlEye, which Rockstar calls kernel anti-cheat software. It only needs to run online, and you can switch it off for Story Mode.
Can you play GTA Online without BattlEye?
No. Rockstar says BattlEye is required to play GTA Online on PC, and Steam Deck players can play Story Mode only. You can turn it off for Story Mode in the Rockstar Games Launcher or with the -nobattleye launch argument.
Can a GTA Online ban affect other Rockstar games?
It can. Rockstar says cheat developers and other serious offenders can be banned from all its titles at once. Its policy also says actions may affect your account and/or your gaming system.
Can you appeal a GTA Online ban?
Yes. Rockstar takes suspension and ban appeals through rsg.ms/appeal, but warns that baseless appeals may be closed or lead to more action on the account.
